Living in the Cusco Countryside

The Allen Home...page 2

The front door opens into a large living room/dining room combination.  There are NO closets in the house so they have to be creative for storage.  Any electrical appliance from the U.S. has to go through a transformer...not always convenient for them, but necessary.

Trek, the German Shepherd, sleeps outside at night.  Inca, the little obviously part Cocker Spaniel puppy they rescued from drowning in a drainage creek a few months ago sleeps in the indoor kennel at night.

They use their ipod and two speakers for music which, surprisingly, has a large great sound...

The keyboard set up on a table below is where Sarah practices piano, and Noelle is learning the violin.

The photo at left was taken right before Kate's 2nd birthday party so cameras and presents await...

Again the fact there are no closets in the house requires creative storage, so the halltree below beside the back door holds the family's coats and jackets.

The large living area has two mirrored "nooks" which are recessed into the wall and surrounded by decorative stone.  Glass shelves within the nook hold framed photos, candles and other decorative items.  They've had several pieces of furniture made to their specifications by a carpenter there in Peru.

None of the homes in Peru have HEAT, so during the Fall and Winter season, the temperature in the house often falls below 55 degrees!  They layer clothing and use flannel sheets and alpaca blankets...

Yolanda, family friend and maid, in the small kitchen.  Here again, storage is at a premium.  The center island helps with both counter space and storage.  They've also placed a pot rack in the kitchen which helps.

This photo was taken just prior to Kate's 2nd birthday party.  Jeanine had made homemade pizza dough for a pizza and salad party!
